Biological filter media, on the other hand, provide the correct conditions for the colonisation of bacteria cultures: the purification bacteria feed off the dirt particles and convert them. Above all, in this way clear, healthy water and stabile water values are arrived at in the aquarium.Our latest development is a combination filter medium, which simultaneously carries out both mechanical and biological functions. EHEIM bioMECH Mechanical-biological filter medium for combined water treatmentbioMECH has been cleverly designed: dirt-trapping pockets capture and retain large and small dirt particles. At the same time the subtely designed pore structure provides colonisation for the purification bacteria and thus ensures reliable biological decomposition. The material is pH-neutral and does not contain water hardeners. EHEIM bioMECH is washable and reusable many times over.

The main task of biological filter media is to offer the best colonisation conditions for the bacteria cultures, so that after a short time a bacteria lawn develops. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kind and convert substances critical for the aquarium.
After the first cleaning process by the mechanical filter media (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro) the biological filtration is the most important. It provides for clear, healthy water and stabile water values. That’s why we have invested a lot of research work into the development of biological filter media. Tip:Never clean or change all the filter media together in one operation (and never clean too rigorously). The bacteria cultures must not be completely destroyed, otherwise recolonisation will be retarded. The filter baskets in the external filters and filter modules in the internal filters aquaball and biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.Optimised bio-filter medium with perfect volume usage, long intervals between cleaning and top decomposition performance. SUBSTRATpro consists of pearl-shaped sintered glass. The spherical shape gives a high bulk density. Thus the whole of the volume in the filter (filter baskets or modules) can be utilised. Active filter carbon with a high performance level – especially after treatment with medications
EHEIM AKTIV is acid washed and activated for automatic water absorption (active surface area 1200 m²/g). Thus, it very quickly binds harmful chemical substances like pesticides, medical treatment residues and other substances and retains them. The water in the aquarium will turn crystal clear. Its use is particularly important after treating the livestock with medications.
EHEIM AKTIV should only be used for a limited amount of time (ca. 4 weeks) and then removed or replaced. In the filter’s layering set-up EHEIM AKTIV should be used directly after the mechanical (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro) and the biological filter media (e.g. EHEIM SUBSTRATpro) in the net bag provided.

Depending on which type, chemical filter media control the pH-value and the water hardness (peat) – or reduce the phosphate level and inhibit the growth of algae (phosphateout).
The pH-value of mains water lies between 7,3 and 7,8 and is therefore slightly alkaline. However, most ornamental fish require acidic water – that is a pH-value under 7,0. EHEIM TORFpellets lower the pH-value and reduce the water hardness. Phosphates mainly occur due to organic pollutants in the aquarium water (fish remains, fish faeces etc.) and are responsible for the growth of algae. EHEIM phosphateout binds the phosphate and removes it from the water circulation.EHEIM phosphateout Chemically acting phosphate remover inhibiting the growth of algae EHEIM phosphateout is a special iron compound for chemical filtration. The iron binds the phosphate, removing it from the water circulation and thus reducing in stages the phosphate levels in the aquarium. In this way algae growth in the aquarium is inhibited. If the phosphate levels and consequently the growth of algae starts to increase, this means that the filter medium is depleted and must be replaced. EHEIM phosphateout is available for external filters in granulate form and for internal filters as a foam filter cartridge. It is free from harmful substances and suitable for fresh and marine water.
