Akkus haben im Gegensatz zu Batterien (Nennspannung 1,5 V) nur eine Nennspannung von 1,2 V. Daher funktionieren batteriebetriebene Geräte, die nicht speziell für Akkus ausgelegt sind, entweder nur mit eingeschränkter Leistung (z. B. Schlammabsauger) oder nur sehr kurze Zeit (z. B. Futterautomat). Hinzu kommt noch eine, teilweise sehr, hohe Selbstentladung. Aufgrund dieser Selbstentladung, müssten Akkus die nicht ständig in Gebrauch sind, vor jeder Verwendung zuerst aufgeladen werden.
Um einen sicheren Futterbetrieb zu gewährleisten, ist eine Betriebsspannung von min. 2,5 V notwendig. (Bei neuen Batterien beträgt die Betriebsspannung 3 V (2 x 1,5 V)). Unterhalb der Schwellenspannung von 2,5 V ist keine Drehung der Futtertrommel mehr möglich. Hierdurch wird verhindert, dass die Trommel z.B. mit der Öffnung nach unten stehenbleibt.
Da Akkus nur eine Betriebsspannung von 2,4 V liefern können, ist diese Schwelle von 2,5 V schon beim Einsetzen von frisch aufgeladenen Akkus unterschritten. Im besten Fall läuft der Futterautomat dann noch einige Tage und zeigt dann trotz voller Akkus das Symbol „LO“ für einen notwendigen Batteriewechsel an. Die Fütterungen werden dann kurze Zeit später gestoppt.
